TV Drama: School Play 2

Here’s the second extract from School Play, the BBC TV drama that was broadcast in November 1979 and seems to have vanished completely since.

The action moves to Long Room where the younger boys (grunts) are playing table tennis (ping-pong). All the schoolboys are played by adult actors. The scene sets up the role one of the House monitors (prefects) Timothy Perkins (Tim Piggott Smith) will play as the drama unfolds.

The action underscores the fear that can be produced in a school and the power that the monitors can wield.

A boy makes a remark that Perkins dislikes and he asks for the guilty boy to own up. Despite his threats nobody does …

Here’s a larger version of the same clip.

  2. It's a TREAT watching this - thank you again! The tyranny of the system in place as personified by the Tim Piggot Smith character feels so authentic (I'm guessing, I wasn't there of course, I grew up in the USA midwest) - the tension & dread of it is awful yet exhilarating to view.
